Dry ice is carbon dioxide in a solid state. The liquid CO2 is taken from a storage tank at a pressure of 16 bar and a temperature of –25°. By expanding to atmospheric pressure, liquid carbon dioxide is transformed into Carbon Snow; the temperature of the carbonic snow is -78°C. When dry ice exchanges heat with its surroundings, it transforms from solid form to gaseous form without passing through the liquid state. This transformation process is called sublimation. For this reason it is called "dry ice"; in fact, when it heats up, it produces neither liquid nor water or humidity and therefore it is "dry". Not only is it odorless and tasteless, but it is also antibacterial, non-toxic and non-combustible. These characteristics make it extremely versatile in use.
